Welcome to StageWorks Toronto. StageWorks Toronto is a theatre company dedicated to bringing dynamic theatre productions to Toronto audiences. Our goal is to provide professional quality theatre at the semi-professional level. We strive to give audiences experiences that rival those found at professional companies around the city. We openly audition and cast based on the needs of our production, and the diverse performance community, giving opportunities for professionally trained actors to hone their craft, and providing opportunities for beginners to learn from the expertise of others. After the near sold-out run of URINETOWN last August at the Annex Theatre, StageWorks Toronto is thrilled to announce its 2013 annual musical production, Jason Robert Brown's PARADE. We are excited to present PARADE at a new venue, the George Ignatieff theatre, and to extend our run to two weeks from August 8-18, 2013. We welcome back to StageWorks Toronto Into the Woods and URINETOWN director Lorraine Kimsa, and URINETOWN musical director Tom Kerr.
Daring, innovative, and bold, PARADE won well-earned Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score in 2000. Its subject matter offers a moral lesson about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance that should not be forgotten.
In 1913, Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia, is put on trial for the murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker under his employ. Already guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor's false testimony seal Leo's fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience, and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion.
